Notes - James P. Duncan was shown in the 1850 Census, Person Co., NC as a white male, 38 years old. He had the following in his household: Mary Mitchell, 30; William T. Mitchell, 8; Henry Mitchell, 4; and James R. Mitchell, 1. All of these other household members were listed as mulatto. Mixed marriages were not allowed, so the children were probably fathered by James P. Duncan but kept their mother's name. I am listing Mary Mitchell as James P. Duncan's partner, and the children as belonging to James P. Duncan until I find evidence to the contrary.
