Mary Emma Doty Gleason, 94, of Arden, N.C., formerly of Greene County, died Sunday morning in Arden with her daughter, Alice Gleason, in attendance.

She was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Elizabeth George Doty of Tusculum and was preceded in death by her husband, Joel William "Bill" Gleason Jr., who died May 16, 1997, on their 56th wedding anniversary.

Her family provided the following statement:

"Mary was a loving, devoted wife and mother and a lifelong Christian. She was the wife of a career Army officer, which required them to move frequently. They lived in several areas of the United States and lived three years in Verdun, France. While there, she became active in Girl Scouts leadership. She led the American Girl Scouts of Verdun for two years, then at the request of the Girl Scout Council Headquarters, she became instructor for Girl Scout leaders in the northeastern Province of France.

"After Mr. Gleason retired in 1959, they returned to Greeneville to Mrs. Gleason's family home in Tusculum.

"Mrs. Gleason always took an active part in church activities wherever she lived, and was a lifelong member of Hermon United Methodist Church in Afton.

"After moving back to her roots, she became interested in family history and did extensive research, eventually publishing a book of her family. She also compiled the history of Hermon Church for the 175th anniversary.

"She worked, along with her daughter, for many months doing research and combining death dates from the years 1908 through 1949 for Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.

In 1999, she published a book of her poems and writings. She also enjoyed painting with water colors and continued painting until her eyesight failed.

"In 1996, the Gleasons moved to Arden to be near their daughter."

Survivors in addition to her daughter, include her special nieces: Jeanne Morelock of Chuckey, Doris Conduff of the Camp Creek community, Lu Simmons of Chuckey, a very special niece, Hillis Morelock of Arden, and Sally Truitt of Seymour; and special nephews: Lewis Gleason Jr. of Tucker, Ga., Billy Gleason of Atlanta, Ga., Johnny Looney of Independence, Ky., and Tommy Looney of Knoxville.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Bruce (Merle) Morelock and Mrs. Melvin (Coleen) Radford.
